Excellent site for Houstonians and former Houstonians who have finally realized their love/ hate relationship with Houston is more love than hate.

I would like to contribute an entry under the “Houses” topic. The Clayton House, a part of the Clayton Library, Center for Genealogical Research, is currently being renovated. I am working with one of the Clayton Library Friends on research for a documentary on William Lockhart Clayton, who lived there with his wife Susan Ada Vaughn.

We live in the Robindell subdivision…Hillcroft and North Braeswood, 77074 zip. We have heard that when the subdivision was being built it was called “The Working Man’s River Oaks”…can you tell me anything about this.

Your site gets better each time I look at it. It is especially good to see pictures and graphics of the historic subjects. Keep up the good work! With all of us working together, we might eventually preserve the rich and varied history of this town. Thanks for citing our works, too.

Some Additional Information on the DePelchen Faith Home Building. As a native Houstonian (Bellaire/Sugar Land) I have for several years been searching for information on a once stylish Night Club that was located just West of downtown and that I remember visiting with my Parents in the mid 1950’s. When I came across the Historian piece on the DePelchen building, I recognized it immediately. In the 1956-57 period, the Night Club was named Henri’s. As I remember, it was a private club whose membership entitled one to Diner, Dancing and Liquor by the drink that was otherwise illegal in 1950’s Houston. My Fathers membership was an executive perk provided by his employer, Texas Freight Company and whose offices were in the Zindler Building downtown. I even met Mrs. Priester once and she reminded me of a slimmer gray haired Sophie Tucker type who was always working the tables cavorting with here customers. Dress at the club was always formal, the menu first class. I also remember the swimming pool on the Patio – I attended a private party there in the summer of 1960. Thanks for memories.

I’ll be responding to a couple of you by email.

Mr. Aulbach – Appreciate your comments very much! I can only hope that some of the short pieces here bring more attention to your research and writing!

I have a scan from a Good Gulf map showing a detail of Downtown Houston. It is undated but must be from about 1940 – It mentions the New City Hall. At 19 x 20 inches, 100 dpi, it is quite readable. It is in jpg format and a little less than 2 MB in size. I would be happy to email it if you would want to post it in the Old Maps section.
    Thanks
